Geothermal: Market Data

Geothermal Power Market Data

U.S.
USGS Geological Survey (September '08) - Identified 9,057MW of geothermal electric generation potential in 13 states. The mean estimated power production potential from undiscovered geothermal resources is 30,033MW. It also estimated another 517,800MW of geothermal production could be brought online in regions with high temperatures, but low permeability rock formations.

MIT's The Future of Geothermal Energy (January '07) - Found enhanced geothermal and other geothermal energy technologies could provide 100GW of electricity in the US by 2050.

Worldwide
It is estimated that conventional geothermal sources could provide 70GW on a global basis. Enhanced geothermal technology could double this total to 140GW.

Cost
Recent installations have shown geothermal electricity production costs beyween 4.5 to 7.3 centts per kilowatt-hour(kWf).
