Hydrofoils & Sails
Hydrofoils and sails operate uniquely from the other Tidal Stream Turbines in terms of design and power generation. In both cases, the movement of the hydrofoils and sails moves hydraulic arms, which pressurize oil that powers generators. The key advantage of these devices as compared to turbines is that each use significantly less space and can operate in shallower water.
Hydrofoils have wings (similar to airplane wings) or fins attached to an arm (looking like the tail of a shark) that move based on the movement of the current.
Sails use one, or a series of flat, rigid structures to sway in the movement of the tide.
