Biodiesel: Who's Involved [Americas (ex. U.S.)]

Africa       Americas (ex. U.S.)       Asia       Australia       Europe       U.S.

There are no biodiesel plants in Canada with a capacity over 50MGY. The industry is still in the development stage as the Canadian government is seeking to reach roughly 130MGY by 2010. Most of the plants in Canada use Canola Oil, Waste Vegetable Oil and Animal Fat as feedstocks.

The biodiesel market is much more developed in South America with 600MGY in production in 2008, with Argentina and Brazil making up most of the production. Argentina is expanding biodiesel production on the use of soy oil, with expectations to reach 1BGY of capacity by 2010.

While known as an ethanol producing country, Brazil is expanding its biodiesel production through the use of soy oil. Despite having only one large plant Brazil is starting to get major capital backing as Petrobras is getting into the space. It currently has three smaller refineries (~15MGY), but plans to increase total capacity to 225MGY by 2011. The largest producer today is Brasil Ecodiesel, who owns five plants with a total capacity of 125MGY.

Columbia is a distant third in production capacity in South America, with two plants making up most of the 38MGY in capacity. The country is investing heavily in planting oil palm plants for its own use and export.

Paraguay and Uruguay each have several very small scale processors, which use animal fats, soy, and jatropha.
