The biodiesel industry is growing in
China, led by Gushan Environmental who owns 5 facilities at a total capacity of 87MGY, with plans to continue capacity expansion. A number of other firms, including PetroChina and CNOOC are investing in the space with plants in the 10MGY to 40MGY capacity range. Chinese producers use a variety of feedstocks, with a focus on palm oil and jatropha from Indonesia and Malaysia.
Biodiesel production first came online in
Indonesia in 2008, despite being a leading exporter of palm oil. While capacity is relatively low, the plants that have or are coming online are of commercial size (20+MGY). A number of projects have been delayed with the rising prices of palm oil.
Biodiesel production in
Malaysia is similarly dependent on palm oil and palm oil prices. The country has only
10 completed plants at a total capacity of 130MGY. One of these plants is being expanded to 96MGY.
Singapore is growing rapidly in production capacity with several major projects coming online. Most of the capacity is owned by a few firms, with Natural Fuels making up 164MGY with its facility and 220MGY coming online from Neste Oil. All production uses palm oil as the feedstock.
